A Note to the Black Abbey Community,

Over the past few days, we’ve heard from many of you—supportive messages, thoughtful questions, and understandable concerns. We want to speak directly and transparently about this moment.

Brewing is not an easy business. For independent beer companies across the country, the last few years have been especially challenging. Rising costs, changing consumer habits, and tightening margins have forced even well-loved brands to make difficult decisions simply to survive.

The partnership with Jackalope Brewing Company gives Black Abbey Brewing Company something invaluable in today’s environment: stability and a real path forward. This transaction ensures the Black Abbey brand doesn’t just exist in memory—but continues to brew, to serve, and to grow into its next chapter.

We also want to address a question we’ve received from many of you: the tap room remains open during this transition. As Black Abbey winds down operations, the tap room will continue to operate and welcome guests until that process is complete, offering continuity and a familiar gathering place while the next chapter is thoughtfully put into place.

We also recognize that acquisitions come with hard realities. Not every role carries over in a transaction like this, and we know that impacts real people—not just balance sheets. We are actively working to help affected team members find opportunities, including conversations and interviews currently underway. While we can’t share specifics, we want our community to know this effort is real and ongoing.

Looking ahead, Black Abbey will have a meaningful presence within the Jackalope tap room, including dedicated draft lines, merchandise, and ongoing visibility that keeps the brand in front of both longtime supporters and new fans.

This partnership strengthens Jackalope as well, making the combined company more resilient in a difficult industry. That resilience is what gives both brands the chance to survive—and ultimately thrive—rather than quietly disappear, as so many breweries have in recent years.

We are deeply grateful to our community for caring enough to ask hard questions, and for supporting independent beer when it needs it most. Black Abbey’s story continues, and we’re committed to honoring what came before while building something sustainable for what comes next.

our story

born out of defiance

Founded in 2013 by John Owen and Carl Meier, Black Abbey was born from a desire to defy the corporate mold and redefine American craft beer. Inspired by European brewing traditions, they set out to create something different—something timeless.

In an industry flooded with trends and gimmicks, Black Abbey chose another path. By embracing traditional styles, time-honored brewing methods, and an uncompromising dedication to their brand, they’ve built a portfolio of beers that are unmistakably Black Abbey—bold, balanced, and rooted in history.

conviction to quality

When Martin Luther had enough of the corruption and spectacle of the Catholic church, he didn’t just complain. He wrote a formal dispute, went to the church, and nailed the damn thing to the door. And others followed him.

At Black Abbey, we say cheers to that. It’s our inspiration for a process that’s 600 years in the making. It’s the reason we bestow our handcrafted beers on all who’ve been exalted by the revelation. Above all else, it’s our calling. These are beers born out of defiance, brewed with conviction, and quaffed by fellow devotees.

respecting traditions

Medieval records indicate that brewing was a purely female endeavor. Martin Luther’s wife, Katharine Von Bora, brewed beer at their homestead, financing his ministry! Drawing inspiration from this history, Alisha carries the legacy of women in brewing forward with passion and precision.

Alisha elevates The Black Abbey’s catalog of beers, pushing boundaries and redefining expectation while remaining committed to classic styles and
time-honored traditions. With every pour, Alisha transformed beer from a simple beverage into an unforgettable experience.
